Cost Per Click

Cost per click (CPC) is the average amount you pay Meta each time someone clicks your ad. On a high-ticket call funnel it's an input to the funnel math, not a target, because a click proves nothing about the buyer.

What's a normal cost per click on Meta?

The average cost per click we see on Meta is around $2.50. It depends on the industry, so treat it as a planning number rather than a promise. Your own cost per click moves with your market and your creative, and after a few weeks of spend your account's real number should replace mine in every model you run.

How do you use cost per click in funnel math?

Start the model at the click and walk it through every stage to the close. At $2.50 a click, 1,000 clicks cost about $2,500. On my floors, those clicks become roughly 350 VSL viewers, 35 applications, 21 qualified bookings, 17 shows and 5 to 6 clients.

Stage Floor Out of 1,000 clicks
Clicks $2.50 each $2,500 in ad spend
Watch the VSL 35% of clicks 350
Apply 10% of viewers 35
Qualify and book 60% of applicants 21
Show up 80% of bookings 17
Close 33% of qualified calls 5 to 6

At a $5,000 deal, even one close returns 2x on that spend. These are my floors from my accounts, not industry benchmarks, so plug in your own cost per click, application rate, booking rate, show rate, qualified rate, close rate and average cash collected. That's how I plan ROI before a campaign goes live, because it tells you what a click is worth before Meta has told you anything.

Why isn't cost per click the number to optimize?

Because a click costs the person nothing. The first honest signal in the funnel is the application, because it takes effort, so judge the front end on cost per application and the ads on cost per booked call.

An ad that says plainly who it isn't for can push your cost per click up and still be the better ad, because the people it filters out were never going to buy. If you push the cheapest clicks, you usually get the cheapest intent with them. That's the same trap as optimizing for cost per lead.

When does cost per click actually matter?

As a diagnostic. If cost per click climbs, check the ads and the market before you touch the page. If cost per click is normal but fewer than 35% of clicks go on to watch the VSL, the problem is the gap between the ad's promise and the page, not the price of the click.

Read it next to the stages after it. A cheap click that never watches the video costs you more than an expensive one that applies.

FAQ

Is a low cost per click good?

Only if those clicks turn into applications and booked calls. A cheap click from someone who never watches the VSL is wasted spend, however good it looks in Ads Manager.

Should a Meta ads agency report cost per click?

As a diagnostic, yes. As the headline number, no: the account should be judged on cost per qualified booked call and cash collected.
