Landing Page
A landing page is the page a prospect reaches after clicking an ad. In a high-ticket funnel it holds the VSL, the proof and the application button, and its one job is getting the right person to apply.
What goes on a high-ticket landing page?
Three answers above the fold, because cold traffic decides fast: what's in it for me, how do you do this, and why you. The headline answers the first, the subheadline explains the how, and the VSL underneath explains the mechanism, with a button to apply right below the video. The why-you is proof: case studies or other social proof directly under that section, or inside it if it fits.
There's no navigation. If you have to have one, keep it to your logo, a few links that scroll to sections of the same page and the same button as the hero, with no external links, because every link off the page is a way out of the funnel.
The rest of the page is the text version of the VSL. Some people like to read, some like to watch, some like to listen, so the page and the video make the same argument in two formats. Anything that doesn't add value, proof or a reason to work with you comes out.
What's a good landing page benchmark?
On a VSL page I hold two floors from my accounts: 35% of clicks should watch the VSL, and 10% of those viewers should apply. On 1,000 clicks that's 350 viewers and 35 applications. Each floor isolates a different problem, so I read them separately.
| Check | My floor | On 1,000 clicks | What a miss points at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clicks to VSL viewers | 35% | 350 viewers | A gap between what the ad promised and what the page delivers |
| Viewers to applications | 10% | 35 applications | The VSL or the page copy |
| Cost per application | Stable week to week | Depends on your spend | The script and the page, not the targeting |
These are my floors in my niches, not industry benchmarks. If your business is genuinely different, your floors will be too, but you need some floor to read the page against.
Should you gate the VSL on a landing page?
No. No timers and no forced watch gates. Someone should be able to click the ad, land on the page and apply straight away, because for some people the ad was persuasive enough and they just want the conversation. Making them watch 5 minutes first feels like homework and increases drop-off.
The same goes for asking for an email before they've seen anything. For high-net-worth buyers in particular, handing over a name and email before getting any value looks scammy. Plain HTML, fast and ungated: fast beats fancy every single time. Do the educating after they book, on the confirmation page and in the pre-call sequence.
How do you fix a landing page that doesn't convert?
Fix the script and the page, not the targeting settings in the ad account. If the page doesn't convert, nothing does. When cost per application is unstable or absurd, the script and the page are broken, and changing audiences or budgets only changes who sees the same problem.
On a brand-new agency offer with no warm list, the funnel built around a VSL landing page and an application booked 129 cold calls at $271.91 each.
FAQ
Does a landing page need a VSL?
You could skip it, but across $30M in ad spend managed, having the VSL on the page has lifted the conversion rate and the quality of booked calls significantly. It's there because people take in information differently, not to show off the editing.
How long should a landing page be?
As long as it takes to answer what's in it for me, how and why you, and no longer. My rule of thumb for the VSL on it is 6 to 8 minutes, going down to 3 to 4 minutes in a sophisticated market that has seen the same offer many times.
