Close Rate

Close rate is the percentage of sales calls that turn into paying clients. I measure it on qualified calls held, not on all calls booked, so ad and funnel problems don't hide inside the sales number.

Why measure close rate on qualified calls?

Because the other stages already have their own numbers. If you divide closes by every call booked, a bad show rate or a weak application form makes your sales team look worse than it is, and you end up retraining closers when the real problem is the funnel. I track four numbers separately: booked, showed, qualified, closed.

What's a good close rate for a high-ticket offer?

My benchmark is 30% on qualified calls for a closer who is competitive and knows the offer well. A brand-new agency offer I worked on closed 24 of 71 qualified calls, which is 33.8%, on cold traffic with no warm list.

When close rate is low and show rate is fine, the cause is usually the sales process or what the prospect knows before the call:

  • One client of mine was stuck around a 12% close rate with every earlier stage in place. We rebuilt the call structure and the pitch deck together, and it went to 35%.
  • In my accounts, adding a real pre-call sequence has moved close rates from around 7% to 15%, because the prospect arrives already educated instead of needing the closer to build belief from zero.

How does close rate connect to ad spend?

It decides how much you can pay for a call. At a 30% close rate on qualified calls and a $7,000 average deal, every qualified call is worth about $2,100 in revenue, which tells you exactly how high your cost per booked call can go before the account stops paying for itself.

FAQ

Should I blame the ads when close rate drops?

Check the stages first. If show rate and call quality held steady while close rate fell, the ads aren't the problem.
