Sales Script

A sales script is the planned sequence a closer follows on a sales call, from the prospect's problem to the ask. The useful kind is a structure that adapts to the call, not lines read word for word.

What should a sales script include?

The steps I use on a high-ticket call: outline the problem, show the solution, back it with proof, handle objections, show why you're the better option, add urgency and ask for the sale. On a one-call close all of that happens in one sitting, which fits packages of roughly $2,000 to $5,000 sold to small businesses. On deals of $5,000 and up sold into mid-market or enterprise, discovery and mapping the stakeholders come first, and the same steps spread across several calls.

Should a closer read a sales script word for word?

No. A script read word for word breaks the moment the prospect says something you didn't plan for. What I build is a dynamic sequence: the closer knows which step they're on and what has to be true before moving to the next one, and the words fit the person on the call.

How much does a sales script change close rate?

More than most founders expect. One client of mine was closing around 12% of calls with the right traffic and the right offer. I listened to their recorded calls, won and lost, and there was no structure. We rebuilt the call structure and the pitch deck together, and close rate went to 35% with the same traffic and the same closers.

Situation Close rate in my accounts
No call structure Around 12%
Same client after rebuilding the structure 35%
My benchmark on qualified calls 30%
Brand-new agency offer on cold traffic 33.8% of qualified calls

Why does a repeatable script make closing easier?

Because the closer stops improvising. When the same kind of lead hears the same pitch, your closer has had the conversation hundreds of times, which is when close rate goes up and when you can hand the calls to someone other than the founder. A script also shows you where calls break: listen to the lost ones and check whether the closer reached the ask and set a defined next step.

What can't a sales script fix?

The wrong buyer. If people who can't pay are booking, no script closes them, because the filter belongs in the ad and the application. It also can't do the education that belongs before the call: a cold prospect who arrives knowing nothing uses up the call before you reach the pitch. That's the job of the pre-call sequence, which in my accounts moved close rates from around 7% to 15%.

FAQ

Do bigger deals need a different sales script?

Usually. Up to roughly $5,000 with one or two decision makers, one call covers the whole sequence. Above that, especially in B2B, I plan several calls with 10 to 14 days between them and book the next one before each call ends.

Can a better script fix a low close rate?

Only when the problem is on the call. Check show rate and call quality first. If those are at floor and close rate is still low, the call structure is the first thing I'd rebuild.
