VSL Funnel

A VSL funnel is a paid traffic funnel that sends cold ad clicks to a landing page with a short video sales letter, then an application, a calendar and a pre-call sequence before the sales call.

What are the parts of a VSL funnel?

It starts with ads on cold traffic, which send people to a landing page carrying a 6 to 8 minute VSL and the same argument in text. An application of 3 to 6 questions qualifies them before they see the calendar, and anyone who passes books a call. Between the booking and the call sits the pre-call sequence: a confirmation page, emails, retargeting and a human touch from a setter or closer, so people show up knowing what you do.

I default to this funnel for high-ticket services, coaching offers and programs sold on a call, because it gets feedback fast and doesn't need the founder live on Zoom. Launch on Monday and by Tuesday or Wednesday you can see whether people are clicking, watching and applying, and what you're paying per qualified booked call.

What results can a VSL funnel produce?

At my floors, 1,000 clicks at a $2.50 average cost per click, about $2,500 in ad spend, become about 350 VSL viewers, 35 applications, 21 qualified bookings, 17 held calls and 5 to 6 clients. These are floors from my accounts, not published benchmarks. Here's what the funnel did on real accounts:

Account Ad spend Booked calls Cost per booked call Revenue
Brand-new agency offer $35,076 129 $271.91 $168,000
PR firm, 63 days $47,627.39 178 About $268 $268,859
Agency selling to ecommerce brands $59,100 243 $243.21 $289,000
High-ticket B2B SaaS $35,627.39 93 $383.09 About $95,000 added MRR

How is a VSL funnel different from a webinar funnel?

Both start with an ad and end on a sales call, and both exist to reduce the trust gap before anyone asks for money. A VSL funnel does it on demand, in a 6 to 8 minute video. A webinar funnel does it live in 60 to 120 minutes, and its feedback loop runs 7, 14 or even 21 days. I'd start with a VSL funnel on cold traffic with a clear offer, and look at a webinar when the offer is complex or full of false beliefs, or your closers can't build belief from zero.

What breaks a VSL funnel first?

Work from top to bottom and fix the first stage under its floor. If fewer than 35% of clicks watch the VSL, the ad's promise and the page don't match. If fewer than 10% of viewers apply, the script or page copy failed. If the show rate sits under 80%, it's the pre-call sequence. Under a third closing on qualified calls, it's the sales process or the wrong buyer.

FAQ

How much ad spend does a VSL funnel need to test?

On a new account, at least $1,400 over 14 days before judging anything. A handful of calls is too small a sample, so read it weekly rather than daily.

Does a VSL funnel work for low-ticket offers?

Not usually. At a $5,000 deal one close pays for the month's clicks, but if you're selling a $500 thing, none of the arithmetic survives.
