Market Sophistication

Market sophistication is how many similar claims and offers a market has already heard, which decides whether a plain promise still works or only a mechanism explaining how it works will cut through.

How does market sophistication change over time?

Markets go through stages. Early on you can just state the claim: lose 20 pounds in 60 days. Then everyone claims it, so the next seller inflates it to 20 pounds in 45 days, guaranteed or you don't pay. Eventually the market has heard every claim and stops believing all of them, and the only thing that cuts through is the mechanism. You stop selling the result and start selling how it works and why it works. Then the mechanism gets copied too, and you have to enlarge it.

Stage What the market has heard What still works
Early Few or no similar claims The plain result: "lose 20 pounds in 60 days"
Crowded The same claim from many sellers A bigger claim with a guarantee: "20 pounds in 45 days, or you don't pay"
Sophisticated Every claim, and it believes none of them The mechanism: how it works and why it's different from what they tried

How do you know how sophisticated your market is?

You don't need to diagnose it exactly. My shortcut is to assume you're at stage three or four no matter what, because stage-three tactics still work in a stage-one market, while stage-one tactics get destroyed in a stage-three one. In practice that means you always bring the mechanism in, and you test it on cold traffic, where your reputation isn't doing the selling for you.

How does market sophistication change your VSL and ads?

It changes how long you can take and what you spend the time on. For most high-ticket offers on cold traffic, the VSL runs 6 to 8 minutes. In an extremely sophisticated market, where people have seen the same offer over and over again, we go down to 3 to 4 minutes and spend that time on standing apart from competitors and building authority.

Agency services are a clear example. Anyone can start an agency this afternoon, so an ecommerce founder has already heard most pitches, which is why the agency in my ecommerce agency teardown had to show how it thinks before it asked for a call.

The same goes for labels in your ads. "Are you a high net worth individual going through a divorce?" is a label, not a message, and it typically gets you nothing with a sophisticated buyer. What follows has to describe their situation precisely enough that they recognize it.

FAQ

Can you scale in a sophisticated market without a famous mechanism?

Yes. A done-for-you offer with heavy proof and a real guarantee can carry you without one. Don't spend three weeks naming a mechanism when the offer already works.

Is B2B advertising less sophisticated than ecommerce?

Often, in the feed. Ecommerce ads are saturated and consumers have a high bar for which ads they pay attention to, while far fewer B2B companies have the money to invest in advertising. The category still matters, though: an agency selling to founders who get pitched constantly is in a sophisticated market however it advertises.
