Ideal Customer Profile
An ideal customer profile (ICP) is a specific description of the one buyer an offer is built for: their situation, what they've already tried, what they can pay and how urgently they need it solved.
What goes into an ideal customer profile?
Four things, and they're the same four my application form asks about: the buyer's current state, what they've already tried that didn't work, their budget reality and their timeline. On top of that sits their story. Where is this person right now, what did they try, and what did it cost them when it failed? Write it from real sales call research, not from your head.
My own ideal client is worth at least $15,000 in lifetime value. That number is part of the profile, because it decides what I can afford to pay for a booked call and which buyers my message has to speak to.
Why does a high-ticket offer need a narrow ICP?
Because if you talk to everyone, you can't sell to anyone. A cold prospect needs to recognize their own situation in the ad within seconds, and a message written for every possible buyer describes nobody's situation well enough for that. One niche, one avatar, one promise.
| Generic | Specific | |
|---|---|---|
| Person | Any business | A $1M+ D2C ecommerce brand |
| Problem | "Marketing" | Checkout page conversion |
| Way | "We do everything" | Language models generate page variants from research, then they're split tested live |
Same skill set, completely different business. The specific version can defend its price, because nobody can compare it like-for-like.
How do you find the ICP for a new offer?
Sell the offer by hand first. If you'd take literally anybody who can pay, you don't have an offer worth filtering for yet, so go get five customers by hand, define your ICP from the ones who bought, and only then run ads to that profile.
Then keep it narrow when you advertise. On a small budget I stick to three or four avatars with the highest chance of buying, and each ad speaks to one specific pain point and desire for one of them.
How does the ICP show up in the funnel?
In three places. The ad says out loud who the offer is for and who it isn't for, which is the cheapest qualification there is because the people it removes never cost you a click. The application asks the profile's questions before the calendar appears. And the proof matches the profile: 10 to 15 case studies of people who look exactly like the buyer can do more than famous logos.
FAQ
Can an offer have more than one ICP?
Yes, if the offer genuinely fits several personas. Build a separate campaign and message for each one instead of running the same ads at all of them, so every ad describes one buyer's situation precisely.
Is "high net worth" an ICP?
No, that's a label. "Are you a high net worth individual going through a divorce?" gets you almost nothing on its own. What follows has to describe their situation so accurately it's uncomfortable.
