LTV to CAC Ratio

LTV to CAC ratio is a customer's lifetime value divided by what it cost to acquire them, showing how many times over a customer repays the spend that won them.

What's a good LTV to CAC ratio?

There's no universal number, and I'd be careful with anyone who quotes you one without asking how the money arrives. What I can tell you is where the SaaS companies I see actually sit. The ones that stall on paid acquisition usually hover around 1 to 2:1, with a payback period of 6 to 12 months and sometimes 12 to 18. Once the front end is rebuilt around a high-ticket onboarding offer, the ratio in my accounts moves to somewhere around 4, 5 or 6:1.

Situation LTV to CAC ratio Payback
Low-ticket SaaS, stalled on ads Around 1 to 2:1 6 to 12 months, sometimes 12 to 18
Paid onboarding offer at $3,000 to $10,000 on the front end Around 4 to 6:1 Day one, cash upfront

Why does a 1 to 2:1 ratio break a SaaS ad account?

Because at that ratio a customer barely repays what it cost to win them, and only after months. If churn shows up before payback, some customers leave before you've earned back their acquisition cost, and the ad account looks like it's losing money even when the targeting is fine. It also costs you the auction: in 2026 the business that can pay the most to acquire a customer wins, and a thin ratio means you can't afford to.

How do you raise your LTV to CAC ratio?

Raise what a customer pays you early instead of chasing a cheaper click. For SaaS, that usually means selling onboarding, setup or migration as its own paid offer priced at $3,000 to $10,000, then moving the activated customer onto the subscription. The front end pays for acquisition on day one, and customers who paid for a guided setup are more likely to activate, stay and expand, which pushes lifetime value up as well.

Don't read the ratio as a reason to buy the cheapest calls you can find. A high-ticket B2B SaaS I worked with paid $383.09 per booked call, the most expensive call in any of my case studies, and it was the best month the company ever had: monthly recurring revenue went to $187,910 from roughly $90,000 to $95,000. A subscription worth that much carries a cost per call that would sink a low-priced plan. The full breakdown is in the B2B SaaS Meta ads teardown.

FAQ

How do you calculate LTV to CAC?

Divide the revenue a customer brings in over the whole relationship by what it cost to acquire them, usually ad spend plus sales costs per customer won. Use real retention data for lifetime value, not the plan price times a hopeful number of months.

Is LTV to CAC the same as ROAS?

No. ROAS compares revenue to spend over a window, usually the first payment. LTV to CAC covers the whole relationship, which is why a SaaS account returning about 2.7x on its first month of added recurring revenue can still be the best acquisition decision the company has made.
